Chapter 30

Taking every country road he could find that would still land him in Iron Mountain was his only option. The rescheduled appointment with Mary Ann was set up for seven o’clock, and he’d make it with a half hour to spare.

George pulled into a gas station on the edge of town. After running through the woods and creek earlier, and now without a change of clothes, he was sure he looked a mess.

Parking at the side of the building where the restrooms were located, George exited the Chrysler and gave the men’s bathroom doorknob a jiggle—it opened.

Good. It’s a one-person bathroom. I can clean up without attracting attention to myself if anyone walks in.

He locked the door at his back and stared at his reflection in the mirror. “Jesus. I’m surprised Jacob Daily actually opened his front door to someone who looked this bad.”

George dampened a wad of paper towels, peeled off his shirt, and began scrubbing the dirt off his arms, neck, and face. He carefully loosened the gauze bandage from his arm. The puncture wounds from the dog bites were raised, red, and oozing with infection.

Damn it, I’ll have to buy more supplies. Maybe I can find something inside the mini-mart, including a ball cap. If the cops are smart enough to figure out where I’ve gone, at least they’re less likely to recognize me on video with my face obstructed.

George shook out the green plaid shirt before putting it back on. Weeds and bits of dirt fell to the floor.

At least the pattern hides some of the grime.

He glanced at his pant legs and shrugged. There was nothing more he could do shy of stopping at a store and buying a new pair of pants. He tipped his wrist and decided to go for it. If he hurried, he could purchase everything he needed at a big-box store. Taking the chance of Mary Ann slamming the door in his face because of his disheveled clothing wasn’t worth it. Back in the car, George pulled up the location of the closest store that carried clothing and medical supplies.

Good, only nine blocks from here and in the same direction I’m going anyway.

At 6:40 p.m., George parked in the space closest to the entrance and walked at a quickened pace. He made a beeline to the men’s department, grabbed a pair of jeans and a ball cap, then checked the aisle markers for the medical supply area. With the basket hanging from the bend in his elbow, George grabbed a new supply of gauze, tape, peroxide, and antiseptic ointment then paid at the self-checkout counter with Jacob’s cash. He was in and out in less than fifteen minutes.

Sitting in the car, George pulled off his stained pants and replaced them with the new ones while his mind flooded with ideas of how he’d murder Mary Ann. She wasn’t the woman he’d fantasized about killing, but like the others, she would do for now. One by one, those pariahs would die at his hand.
